Cardington Cracker

Cardington Cracker.

Andy Davies from Newtown, Powys, strode to a hat trick of victories in the 23rd Cardington Cracker Fell Race. The Cracker race which is 9 miles with 2600 feet of climbing including the summits of Lawley, Caer Caradoc, Gaerstone Rock and Willstone Hill. This traditional pre Christmas race regularly attracts a good quality field of over 200 runners from as far afield as South Wales, Cambridge, Essex and Yorkshire.

Andy who still plays regular football in the Welsh Premier League is also a Welsh International Fell Runner who was 12th in last years British Fell Running Championships won by his brother Tim, who is also a 5 times winner of the Cracker and the race record holder. The quality in the race this year was evident as there were 4 of the top 12 in the British Championship all taking part in the mens race. Despite the most difficult conditions in the 23 year history of the race, with snow and ice covering much of the course, 31 year old Andy Davies of Mercia Fell Runners, winning time of 1 hour 12 minutes and 57 seconds was amazing as it was less than 30 seconds slower than his winning time last year. Steven Cale, the leader of the Shropshire Winter Series and of the recent Wrekin Wrecker Race, who was 10th in the British Championships was the early leader and caught by Davies on the ridge just after Gaerstone Farm as the runners headed for Willstone Hill. At Willstone Hill Davies had a 21 second advantage which he extended to just under a minute by the finish. The Shrewsbury AC runner, who is improving every year, is a teacher at Wrekin College, finished in 1.13.50, just 53 seconds behind the winner, but 30 seconds quicker than last year when he was again second to Davies, but full two minutes behind him.

Richard Roberts from Eryri in Snowdonia, 11th in the British Champs, was third almost 4 minutes behind Cale in 1.17.45. Oswestry's Paul Jones, who had finished a superb 3rd in the North wales Cross Country League ran well for 6th and the first over 40 veteran. Mercia's Pete Vale formerly of Bridgnorth and 9th in the British Champs this year was 8th in 1.24.37. Matt Marston, another Mercia runner, from Clive, who was 10th in the British Under 23 Champs was 11th whilst his team mate Mark Bollom from Shrewsbury, celebrated his first race as an over 40 veteran finishing 12th in 1.25.34 and was the second in his category. Nick Thomas, the Telford Harrier from Bratton was the 3rd over 45 in 1.28.05 whilst Matt Clewes from Newport was the first over 50, 20th overall in 1.29.38, whilst Oswestry's Nick Eyke was 2nd over 50 in 1.33.54. Paul Gresty from Shropshire Shufflers was the first over 55 in 1.44.19 with Rick Robson, organiser of the Breidden Hills race second over 55 in 1.50.03.

Henry Thomas ( pictured above on Caer Caradoc ) was the first TAC runner home in 42nd and 5th over 45 in 1.35.06. Paul Sanderson was next home in 1.54.36 and the 6th over 55 just ahead of Dave Hopkins 1.55.11 who was the 7th over 55 with Bryan Bridges next in 2.19.47. There were 200 finishers.

Helen Fines, from Todmorden, Yorkshire, won her 4th consecutive womens race but in her slowest winning time reflecting the tough conditions in 1.31.52 but still 3 minutes ahead of her nearest rival. Helen, is one of the top fell runners in the country having finished 2nd in this years British and 4th in the English Championships. Kate Bailey from Stafford running for Staffordshire Moorlands was second in 1.34.53, whilst Shropshire's Mel Price from Woolston, running for Mercia had a brilliant run to place 3rd in 1.35.29. Shrewsbury AC's Anna Bartlett, race winner in 2004 and 8th in this years British Champs, was 4th and first over 40 in 1.36.20. Shropshire Shuffler Val Swingler was the 5th lady home in 1.40.21 with Tattenhall's Sarah Hammond a regular in the North Wales Cross Country League 6th and first over 45 in 1.41.03.

Claire Martin is the newly crowned British and Irish Masters cross country champion. Selected for the England Masters team, 36 year old Claire from Aqueduct travelled to Dublin to represent her country in the British and Irish Masters Cross Country International held at Santry Park, Dublin, the venue for last years European Cross Country Championships. On a muddy but flat 4 lap 6 kilometre course, the Telford AC athlete was content to run with the leading group for the first two laps then sensing a gap she made her break at the beginning of the third lap. She extended her lead to 80 metre by the finish as she came home in 22.07 ahead of her nearest rival fellow England runner Emma Stallard in 22.21 with Scotland's Melissa Whyte third in 22.26. England were second in the over 35's team race to Ireland but won the overall womens race whilst Ireland were second with wales third, Scotland 4th and Northern Ireland 5th. Claire who was the winner of the opening North Wales Cross Country League and 3rd in the first Midland Womens League so far this season plans to race at Wrexham in the next North Wales League, before focussing on the cross country championships after Christmas.

Shropshire YA XC Lge

Heath heads first fixture field.

At the first of the Shropshire Star sponsored cross country league meetings, held at Adams Grammar School in Newport, 150 young runners competed in flat and fast conditions on a bright afternoon.

In the first race, the Under 15 and Under 17 boys started together, but it was the older athletes who set the pace. Russell Adams of Ludlow Runners led the first lap but at just over half way on the three lap race, Ryan Heath of Telford started to pull away. The title holder from last year Guy Gregory went with him but couldn’t hold on to the fast pace. Ryan ran easily to win in 16 mins 08 secs, fifteen seconds in front of Guy with Telford’s Haydn Gleave finishing strongly and just overtaking Adams in the finishing straight. Telford beat Ludlow by just 3 points and the team positions should be close over the next three fixtures.

The Under 15 race was settled on the second and final lap when 1000m from the finish, last year’s champion Ben Ashcroft increased his pace and left the rest behind. He was followed in by fellow Shrewsbury team mate, midland Triple Jump champion, George Speakman who showed what a versatile athlete he is. The Shrewsbury AC club completed their team with Ryan Cullen making his debut in the league in 7th place. Telford athletes came in 3rd, 4th and, with the Midlands 800m champion Josh Burrows coming in 5th, this team competition also looks close.

Harriet Grandfield now a sixth former at Adams Grammar, and so running on home ground, led home the Under 17 girls. Harriet has won at every age group in this league and wants to finish with a win. She finished the 4000m course in 14 mins 2 secs with fellow Telford team mate Jessica Bailey coming in 25 seconds behind. Harriet’s sister Emily completed the Telford team in 6th place and they look set to dominate at this age group.

Another Telford runner who may be hard to beat this year is Isobel Bradley in the Under 15 Girls race. Isobel had an excellent cross country season last year and so far is showing the same pace this year. She in undefeated in both school and club competitions this year and won from a fast finishing Alex Cawthra form Maldwyn Harriers, with Georgia Potts of Bridgnorth in third. Telford won the team but Shrewsbury Girls High School look good in second place. The races over all four meeting will count towards the team championship.

The younger runners race over shorter distances and will always set off at a fast pace. The two Maldwyn athletes slowed the least in the Under 11 boys with Will Evans just beating his Maldwyn Harrier club mate Joseph Crytchley by 3 seconds. Cameron Van Onselen, from Oswestry Olympians, was just another 5 seconds behind in third. The team competition looks too close to call at this stage with seven clubs still in close contention.

The 22 starters in the Under 11 girls race also set off at a near sprint and the winner Eva Wade of Telford completed the mile course in 5 mins 47 secs. Molly Andrews of Bridgnorth also just ducked under the 6 minute barrier in second with Megan Davies third.

The Under 13 girls had to run 2000m and in a very close race Kitty Peel of Moreton Hall school used her sprint finish to good advantage to beat Chloe Evans of Maldwyn Harriers in a time of 6 mins 27 seconds. The battle for the minor medals will be very close with the finish officials finding it hard to separate Fion Sweeney of Telford and Passy Goddard of Shrewsbury High. They were both given the same time but Fion took third place.

In the Under 13 boys Telford runner Alex Burrows looks difficult to beat. He ran away form the high class field to win in 11 mins 11 secs over 20 seconds ahead of second placed Aiden Wade. Telford made it a clean sweep in this age group with David Stephens third.

The next races will be held on October 17th over another fast course at Oswestry. This course is hillier and the local Oswestry Olympians have a reputation for doing well on their home turf.

Stretton Skyline Fell Race

Stretton Skyline

Steven Cale, claimed another Shropshire fell running title when he won one of the toughest races in the Shropshire calendar the 19 mile Stretton Skyline race, organised by Telford Athletic Club. The Wrekin College teacher who runs for Shrewsbury AC comfortably won the 29th Stretton Skyline in 2 hours 30 minutes and 17 seconds finishing a massive 21 minutes ahead of his nearest rival. His time puts him equal 17th on the all time fastest mens list, behind course record holder Ken West whose time of 2 hours 17 minutes and 16 seconds has remained unbeaten since 1986. The only person who has come near to that time in the last ten years is Shrewsburys Mike James who ran 2.18 when winning in 2008.

Cale who burst onto the Shropshire fell running scene over the winter of 2009 when he finished 9th in the Shropshire Winter Series. Since then he has never looked back as he won the Shropshire Summer Series in 2009, then the Shropshire Winter Series in 2010 and most recently the Shropshire 2010 Summer Series. He plans to defend his Shropshire Winter Series title and starts his defence this Sunday at the Breidden Hills Race.

Ed Davies, from Forden near Welshpool moved through the field steadily to finish second in 2.51.30 and was the first over 55 home, with John Hedger third in 2.53.46 and Matthew Fortes of Eryri was 4th in 2.54.29. Matthew Marston, the 22 year old Mercia Fell Runner from Clive, has made a massive impression on the Shropshire fell running scene this summer, after finishing 4th in the Shropshire Summer Series. He finished a superb 5th place in the Skyline, one of the longest races he has run in 2.55.00.

the Stretton Skyline route starts and finishes in Church Stretton. It starts with a climb up Cardingmill Valley to Pole Bank, then down to Little Stretton and up Ragleth Hill. The next climb is Caer Caradoc followed by The Lawley, before the route crosses the valley, across the A49 and climbs back onto the Long Mynd via Gogbatch before descending through Cardingmill Valley to Church Stretton a total of 19 miles and 4450 feet of climbing.

Val Swingler, from Shropshire Shufflers was comfortably the first woman but was also an incredible 6th overall in the race in 2.55.20. This is the 4th fastest ever time in the 29 year history of the race. The only athletes ahead of her on the all time list are course record holder Ruth Pickvance from Cardiff, when she ran 2.46.42 in 2005. Polly Gibb from Coalbrookdale ran the second fastest time of 2.48.54 in 1989 and Anna Bartlett of Shrewsbury AC ran 2.55.05 when finishing 3rd in 2005. This was a great performance and she headed a quality womens field that saw 7 athletes produce times that got them into the top 53 all time performances.

Newport's Helen Skelton was the second woman home in 3.04.10. 15th overall and the 12th fastest womens time ever. Becki Law from Eryri, a Snowdonia based club, was 3rd, 21st overall and 19th fastest ever in 3.08.35. Mercia's Polly Gibb was 4th, 1st over 45, 27th overall in 3.12.21., just ahead of Aberystwyth's Phoebe Webster, 5th, 28th overall in 3.12.50. Her team mate Louise Barker was was 6th 30th overall in 3.16.34. The Shropshire Summer Series champion, Mel Price of Mercia from Woolston, was 7th, 31st overall 35th fastest woman ever in 3.16.47.

North Wales Cross country league race1: Colwyn Bay

The start of the North Wales league races, saw the members of Telford go to the sea side with the sun shinning. Colwyn Bay was the venue for a glorious undulating race which saw a double yet again with victories in the mens and womens races.

Claire Martin took the field on early and found there was no takers to the early pace, with only the juniors to keep her company, Amanda Davies ran a really strong race moving through the field to a very good 5th, once again Cheryl and Julliet pushed each other all the way round finishing 31st and 32nd and Sarah Mackness coming back to cross country came 57th. Well done to all, will update on team position when the results come in.

The mens race was once again a one runner race with Chris Davies going out hard and establishing a lead which never looked in doubt, Mark Dalkins running another superb race finishing 2nd, Greg Wilson coming back to his favourite course to finish 9th, Rob Hughes although starting the race chatting his way round the first few meters of the race came through to a impressive 14th, Martin Turnock came in 29th, Kevin Fisher 32nd, Paul Williams 53rd, Rick Hailey 55th, Dave Talbot 75th, Jamie Davies 83rd, Malcolm Dawes 111th and Paul Sanderson 138th.

Thank you to all that travelled and to the ladies for the lovely cake very nice.

The next race in the north wales league is up at Bangor on the 30th of october.

9 Oct 2010

North Staffs Cross country league Race 1 Winsford.

Its that time of year that the Cross country season is now firmly back and the days are getting colder with the grounds getting muddy.

First up was North staffs league at a new venue of Winsford. The weather was superb and the course was the best we've ever seen for a north staffs meeting. The ladies and junior men were up first. Ryan Heath put in a superb performance to finish 5th . Kim fawkes had a brilliant come back run finishing 1st overal, Michelle Clarke came 3rd, Cheryl Evans was 21st, Juliet Hoad 22nd, Lisa Blagden 35th and making her debut was Jenny Hinton in 61st. This impressive performance from the ladies gave them a 4point lead over Vale royal.

The mens race was lead from start to finish by Chris Davies coming back from some time off due to injury, Mark Dalkins was 3rd, Wayne Daspher 10th, Nick Andrews 26th, John Garmson 44th, Kevin Fisher 55th, Paul Williams 60th, Dave Talbot 80th and another athlete returning from injury Rick Hailey in 90th. The team is up against some very strong opposition with both Staff Moorlands and city of stoke scoring very low points leaving us 63points of first spot. Not impossible to drag back if we can get a few more runners out to take points away from the other teams.

Next race in the North Staffs Calender is 6th of November at Park hall country Park, Weston Coyney, Stoke on Trent.

Looking forward to seeing you all there.

Vic Musgrove Perpetuated 5K

by Mick Ward (Oswestry)

There are thoughts at an event, during it, and after.
Also there are things you see, things you think you see,
things you expect to see. They are often the same. Then
there are things you thought you saw, things you didn't
see, things you might never see.

But what about your thoughts ? Thoughts that people
might be thinking about themselves, and about your self,
if they even notice you. How can we ever know ? This is
why we have to say I love you often enough to retain our
marriages etc (I guess ! : imperfect track record.)
We'll leave out other senses: smell : odd whiff of perfume
(or BO!); taste : when gasping orifice meets flitting
fruitfly;
hearing , perhaps the odd snatch of sound or phrase,
especially from that couple in tights who are training idly
(at your racing speed) and chat about last Sundays epic;
touching, ( or things you'd like to!)You're only only as
old as the woman you feel, Groucho said.
Then there are things perhaps, things you did not quite
phrase, like, Ooh, I'm going well tonight, with or without
but will it last? more...

Telford 10k 24.01.10

Telford 10k

Chris Davies was a comfortable winner in the 26th Telford 10k road race on Sunday, organised by Telford Athletic Club. The race which had twice been postponed due to icy conditions finally got underway with a slightly lower than usual number of finishers. Despite the rearranged date there were still 407 finishers, the race all time best is 476 in 2007. Davies from Newdale, Telford recorded his 6th victory in the race since he first victory in 1996 when the race was held around the streets of Wellington based on the Wellington Swimming Pool. His winning time was 30.21, well outside his course record of 28.52 set in 2003, but he had very little competition as he finished over a minute clear of his nearest rival Aaron Scott from Lincoln, 31.22 with James Lawler from Bedford 3rd in 31.25. Chris is now focussed on the forthcoming Alsager 5 mile race before heading to Brugge for a 10 mile race in March.

The fast Telford Town Park course did produce fast times in the womens race as Gloucester's Gemma Turtle set a new course record of 32.52, the first woman to ever run under 33 minutes on this course and 24 seconds quicker than the previous best set by Amanda Wright from Much Wenlock who ran 33.44 in 2001. Gemma's time is the fastest in the country so far this year and would have been the 6th fastest throughout 2009, behind Mara Yamauchi's 31.43 set in Japan. It was an impressive performance by the 23 year old who the previous day had run a personal best 1500m at the Indoor Welsh Championships of 4.14. Her training partner and team mate Rose Anne Galligan was second in 34.12 with Telford Ac's Claire Martin the 3 times winner of the race 3rd in 34.50, the fgastest performance by an over 35 this year and would have been the 10th fastest in the whole of 2009.

Oswestry's Oli Blake, one of the country's leading 800m runners ran well to finish 6th finishing in 31.41, whilst Paul ward from Telford AC and Wrekin Road Runners was 9th and sescond over 40 in 32.40. Other leading Shropshire rtunners were
12th Robin Sedman Smith, TAC 33.21
15th Jon Bowie, Trismart 33.54
16th Ian Coupland, SAC 33.58
23rd Greg Wilson, TAC 34.19 and first over 50.
45th Jamie Anderson, TAC 36.40

Shropshire Schools Cross Country Championships 2010

Shropshire Schools Cross Country Championships.

Alex Russell from Adams Grammar School, Newport was an impressive winner of the senior boys title at this years Annual Shropshire Schools Cross Country Championships held at Oswestry School on Saturday. In his first year at Adams after moving into the sixth form from Burton Borough School he became the only athlete on Saturday to win a title for the second successive year after he won the intermediate title at Bridgnorth last year. There was a large group of 6 athletes for two of the three laps before Russell broke away to win with 8 seconds to spare over Shrewsbury School's Alex McKay who has made a remarkable improvement after finishing 15th in the intermediate race last year. He also had the satisfaction of leading Shrewsbury School to the team title, for the first time for four years, after the school had previously made the title their own having won it 17 times over a 20 year period. New College's Dennis Gardener ran well to take the bronze medal.

Jessica Bailey was a surprise winner of the Intermediate Girls race with last years winner Harriet Grandfield second and Holly Climo third. Bailey became the first Wrockwardine Wood student to win a county cross country title for 16 years, since Ceri Davies won in 1994, 1995 and 1996 and Joanne Perry won in 1978 and 1979. She won in 14.04, 27 seconds clear of the Harriet Grandfield from Thomas Adams Wemm, who is the Shropshire AA Under 17 Champion this season. Harriet did have the satisfaction of taking a gold medal home as she led her school to retain the team title, whilst Holly Climo from Sir John Talbot School, Whitchurch took third a further 11 seconds adrift.

Nicole Hilliker, from Telford College took the senior girls title following her intermediate girls title in 2008. She won in 14.51 15 seconds clear of Lucy Kesek from Adams Newport with last years silver medallist Megan Lloyd from Ludlow College taking 3rd. Tess McPhillips repeated her 4th place from last year and led Wrekin College to the team title. It is the largest senior girls field and organisers were delighted to have complete senior girls teams, with Shrewsbury School, entering a girls team for the very first time take second with Adams Newport third and Bedstone College 4th.

Joe Evans from Thomas Adams, won one of the closest races of the day as he just got the better of Joe Morris from the Marches school with just 2 seconds between them in the intermediate boys race. Evans a member of the GB Modern Pentathlon squad, was the junior boy winner in 2008 and was 4th in the this age group last year whilst Morris second in the junior boys last year to Wrekin College's Hayden Gleave who was 4th this year just outsprinted for the bronze medal by Ercall Wood's Ryan Heath.Shrewsbury School packed 4 runners in the top 12 to take the team title that they have not won since 2004 with reigning champions Adams, Newport runners up.

Ben Ashcroft became the first ever student from the Grange School, Shrewsbury to ever win a county schools cross country title as he won the junior boys race in 12.47, 14 seconds clear of second placed George Speakman from Church Stretton in the biggest race of the day with 53 finishers.Joss Burrows the Year 7 winner from 2008 took the bronze medal The team race could not be closer as Adams Newport and Wrekin College had the same team points with Adams taking the title on the position of the their fourth and final scorer.

Isobel Bradley from Charlton School, Wellington, the Shropshire AA Under 13 girls champion won a close race with the Shropshire AA Under 15 girls champion Megan Turner from Ludlow School to win the junior girls race by just 3 seconds. Zoe and Amy Partridge, sisters from Church Stretton School took 3rd and 4th. Emily Wright in 6th place led Wrekin College to retain the junior girls team title as they packed 4 girls in the top 10.

Chloe Evans from Ludlow School won the Year 7 girls race as just 4 seconds separated the first 3 finishers. She became the first title winner from Ludlow since Sarah Farnell won the same race in 2002. Passy Goddard from Shrewsbury Girls High School was second with Molly Browne from BRJ College Wellington taking the bronze medal. Moreton Hall School's Year 7 girls team won the title for the first time ever in that age group.

Alex Burrows from Broseley, a Year 7 student at William Brookes School, Much Wenlock follwoed in his older brothers footsteps as he won the individual title, a feat achieved by brother Joss in 2008. Matthew Connor from Priory School, Shrewsbury came second 6 seconds adrift whilst Luke Beckett was third just a second behind, but led his school to their first ever County Schools team title in any boys or girls age group with 57 points, just 2 points clear of second placed William Brookes.
