Womens National Six Stage Road Relay

Telford AC rounded off a superb winter season as they finished 7th in the National 6 Stage Road Relay Championships at Sutton Coldfield. With hundreds of teams from throughout Great Britain taking part the Telford squad were the second Midland team home behind second placed Charnwood AC from Leicestershire. Aldershot won the race in 1 hour 41 minutes and 21 seconds with 4 minutes to spare. They were led by Charlie Purdue who ran the fastest time of the day of 15.23. Swansea were 3rd, Leeds 4th, Norwich 5th, Liverpool 6th and Telford 7th in 1 hour 51.12. This represents one of the best achievements by a Shropshire athletic club being the 7th best team in a truly National Championships is quite remarkable, it is close on the heels of the Telford AC cross country team who finished 2nd in the National Cross Country Championships 4 years ago.

Claire Martin came home 6th on the opening leg in 16.44 the 15th fastest time of the day. Michelle Clarke went out on the second leg running 18.30 and finishing 12th. Cheralyn Evans ran the 3rd leg in 20.29, with Amanda Davies the 4th leg in 18.41. Sarah Mackness improved 4 places on the 5th leg running 19.52 before Kim Fawke took over on the final leg improving 9 places to 7th in 16.56 the 19th fastest on the day.

Telford AC had 3 other runners Lisa Blagden 21.00, Nellie Sanders 20.12 and Juliet Hoad 20.22.

Market Drayton 10K

Market Drayton 10K. This is now an independent race (formerly Müller 10K) and is being organised by a new committee set up to host the race in conjunction with Market Drayton Running Club.

Sexarathon Update

For those of you intending to enter the 2011 Sexarathon series then you must do so well before 6th April (Lilleshall date).

Registering series entries on the night of the first race is a real pain and puts the integrity of the results service in jeopardy. There is no excuse for club members leaving it too late and having to enter on the night. Help us by entering early.

Please note also, if you haven’t paid your membership fees then you will be expected to pay the unattached price of £32 to enter the series.

Shifnal 10K Gallop

The second Shifnal Gallop 10k to be held on Sunday 30th January 2011, starts/finishes at Idsall School and takes a route north from the school grounds into the countryside along quiet country roads, tracks and footpaths. Nearly all the entry fee will go directly to the Midland Air Ambulance Charity to help fund the air ambulance based at RAF Cosford. £800 was donated from the first race last year. Severn Loop 5K

In the interests of health and safety, the Severn Loop 5k that was scheduled for Monday 27th December in the Quarry Park, Shrewsbury has been postponed. A new date of Sunday 13th February 2011 has now been confirmed and the deadline for pre-entries is now extended until Monday 7th February 2011.

TAC Ladies Get Silver Medal Position in the VL35 race.
Excellent work by Amanda Davies, Michelle Clarke, Nellie Sanders and Claire Martin. The girls narrowly missed out on the Gold Medal finishing only 12 seconds behind Dulwich.

TAC Men's team also did very well to finish 7th in a very tough V40 category.

TAC dominated the 2010 March Hair Raiser taking 1st 5 places in the mens race and 1st in the ladies.
Tough little 5.6 mile route, mostly off road and very windy on the day! 186 finishers.

Anderson Sportsperson of The Year

Revenue & Customs Sports Leisure (West Midlands)

The first recipient of RCSL West Midlands Sportsperson of the Year is for the year to 31 October 2009 and has been awarded to Jamie Anderson.

Jamie is a fully committed runner who has during this year competed in regional events, represented our region at national events and represented HMRC at national level. Somehow he also finds the time to compete for Telford Harriers & Telford Athletic Club, where does he find the time?

Here is a list of his many achievements that has earned him this recognition:

RCSL & Civil Service Events

• Finished 3rd in the Half Marathon Championships at Stafford and was part of the HMRC team that won the team competition.

• Finished 6th in the RCSL Cross Country Championships and was part of the West Midlands team that won the team competition.

• Finished 15th in the Civil Service Cross Country Championships and was part of the HMRC team that won the team competition.

• Represented the West Midlands team at the RCSL Sports Day running in the 800m (3rd), 1500m (5th) and 5,000m (3rd) and scoring 19 points for the region.

• Represented the HMRC team at the Civil Service Sports Day running in the 800m (4th), 1500m (3rd) and 5,000m (7th).

• Helped the HMRC team finish 2nd in the 5,000m team competition at the Civil Service Sports Day.

• Finished 22nd in the Civil Service 10K Championships at Battersea Park.

• Finished 5th in the RCSL 10K Championships.

• Represented the HMRC team at the Civil Service Road Relays in Finsbury Park.

• Regularly represented the Civil Service Team in the Midlands Police & Services Cross Country League, with several top 5 finishes and top team scorer.

Telford Harriers & Telford Athletic Club

• Achieved a personal best at the London Marathon finishing in a time of 2:45:48 in 308th place. The time was just under 10 minutes faster than his previous year’s time.

• Ran the Edinburgh Marathon five weeks after the London Marathon finishing in a time of 2:46:48 in 40th place out of over 13,000 entrants.

• Won the ‘Best Male Runner’ at the Telford Harriers presentation evening.

• Won the Telford Harriers ‘Club Race League’.

• Finished 5th in the Shropshire Cross Country Championships.

• Selected and ran for Shropshire in the Intercounties Cross Country Championships at Nottingham.

• After moving to Telford Athletic Club finished 3rd Senior Male in the local six race summer series in which teams from Shropshire, Staffordshire, the West Midlands and further a field take part.

• Was leading scorer for Telford Harriers in all four races as the team finished 3rd in the North Staffordshire Cross Country League Division 2.

• Finished 7th in the individual standings in the North Staffordshire Cross Country League.

• Top three finishes in the Shifnal Half Marathon and Stourbridge Stagger 10 mile races.

• Top ten finishes at The Badger Bite, Suicide Six(ish), Wheaton Aston 10K, Sleaford Half Marathon, Rhayader 20 Miles, Lilleshall 10K, Culbin Forest Run, Shropshire 4 Miles, Welsh Castles Relay Stage 11, Ironbridge 4 Miles.

• Achieved personal bests at numerous distances including Marathon (2:45:48), 20 Miles (2:08:45), Half Marathon (1:16:41), 10km (35:10), 5km (16:51).

There is a trophy that goes with this award and it will be formally presented to Jamie at the RCSL West Midlands Summer Sports Day on 9 June 2009.

Shifnal Gallop 10K

The Shifnal Gallop 10k is a new race that starts/finishes at Idsall School and takes a route north from the school grounds into the countryside along quiet country roads, tracks and footpaths.
Nearly all the entry fee will go directly to the County Air Ambulance Charity to help fund the air ambulance based at RAF Cosford.

London Marathon

Telford Athletic Club have 4 guaranteed places for the 2010 Virgin London Marathon. These are available for fully paid up club members 09/10, first priority will be given to those members who have applied for a marathon place for the 2010 London Marathon and have been rejected. If there are more than 4 names will be drawn 'from a hat'. If there are still places remaining they will be available for club members who have not already applied for a marathon place but would like to run. Again if there are more wanting a place than there are places available names will be drawn 'from a hat'.

The draw if required will be held at the TAC committee meeting on Monday 14th December. Entries have to be sent to the Virgin London Marathon by 8th January 2010.

NATIONAL ROAD RELAY CHAMPIONSHIPS

National Road Relay Championships.

Chris Davies led the Telford Athletic Club senior mens 6 stage road relay team to the fastest time that the club have ever run in the prestigious National Six Stage Road Relay Championships held in Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield. Having competed in this event for almost every year of the clubs history this was an outstanding team performance as the six men ran 1 hour 50 minutes and 30 seconds for the six legs of 5.8 kilometres,improving on their previous best set in 2003.
Davies from Newdale in Telford, has the best record in the country in the National Road Relay Championships, as he holds the course record of 16.25 in 2003, 14 seconds faster than anyone else, he also has the 4th fastest time of 16.42 set in 2007.

On Saturday he had to be up for 5.30 to do his morning post round before heading to Sutton Coldfield to take on the best in the country. This event attracts the best teams from throughout Great Britain who have to qualify through the area road relays. Mo Farah, the European Indoor 3000m champion, representing Newham and Essex Beagles was the star attraction amongst a host of other internationals in the mens and womens races.

Mark Dalkins fresh from his North Staffs League victory ran the opening leg in 17.36 finishing 22nd, the club's second fastset time of the day. Chris Rimmer went out on the second leg finishing 28th in 18.37, before handing over to Chris Davies. Davies stormed through the field despite having a slight ankle injury and improved 22 places to move Telford up to 6th in 16.42, which equals his time from 2007 as the 4th fastest ever. Chris Bagshaw ran 19.30 on the 4th leg before handing over to Chris Carter, promoted to the A team after his impressive run in the Midland relays, who ran 19.39 finishing 25th. Paul Ward who now lives close to the course ran the final leg in 18.26 finishing 22nd in a new club best time.

The race was won by Newham and Essex Beagles by over a minute from last years winners Belgrave, with Aldershot giving the Southern Counties a clean sweep in 3rd. Telford were the 5th MIdland club behind Tipton 8th, Birchfield 9th, Nottingham 12th and Bristol 13th.

Mo Farah who ran the 5th leg for Newham, had the fastest time of the day as he chased Chris Davies's much envied course record, he ran 16.33, the second fastest ever, 9 seconds quicker than Davies on the day but still 8 seconds slower than that the course record. Farah, the top distance runner in Europe is well supported by UK athletics with lottery funding and would not have had to do a mornings work before he raced.

Telford's womens team finished a very good 19th on the day in the womens 4 stage relay held over a slightly shorter 4.3 kilometre course. Cathy Ansell, now based in London as she starts a new university course returned home to run the first leg in 15.16 finishing 24th. Claire Martin ran the second leg in 15.01 moving up to 14th. Michelle Clarke ran the 3rd leg in 16.12 in 15th whilst Nellie Sanders completed the quartet in 16.29 finishing 19th in a total time of 1 hour 2 minutes and 58 seconds. Aldershot comfortably won the race with Chester le Street second and Norwich third, Telford were the 4th Midland team, behind Bristol 4th, Charnwood 6th and Birchfield 7th.

Telford had 2 B teams on the day and their times were Cheralyn Evans 17.20, Lisa Blagden 19.13, Juliet Hoad 22.08, John Sanders 20.38, Wayne Dashper 20.00, Richard Lucock 19.59, Jonathan Hockey 20.13, Paul Williams 21.42 and Dave Mansbridge 20.03.

Chris Davies gets 2nd fastest leg of the day (16:42) with a storming run to help TAC's A team to finish 22nd overall. Chris' course record of 16:25 (2003) still stands although Mo Farah came close yesterday with his 16:33. Mark Dalkins also had an excellent run on 1st leg battling with UK's finest athletes.

Background
The AAA 6-Stage Road Relay was inaugurated in 1969 but was not held in Sutton Park until 1986. The venue was again used in1989 and 1992, and from1995 onwards Sutton Park became the race's permanent home. The course length varied due to haphazard positioning of the cone that marks the turning point at the far end of the circuit. In 2001 a permanent marker was put down but it was some distance further out than had recently been the norm, increasing the recent individual times by something approaching 30 seconds. As a result, the best times from 2001 onwards are now recorded as the course records. The distance is described as being 5847m.
