NATIONAL ROAD RELAY CHAMPIONSHIPS

National Road Relay Championships.

Chris Davies led the Telford Athletic Club senior mens 6 stage road relay team to the fastest time that the club have ever run in the prestigious National Six Stage Road Relay Championships held in Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield. Having competed in this event for almost every year of the clubs history this was an outstanding team performance as the six men ran 1 hour 50 minutes and 30 seconds for the six legs of 5.8 kilometres, improving on their previous best set in 2003.
Davies from Newdale in Telford, has the best record in the country in the National Road Relay Championships, as he holds the course record of 16.25 in 2003, 14 seconds faster than anyone else, he also has the 4th fastest time of 16.42 set in 2007.

On Saturday he had to be up for 5.30 to do his morning post round before heading to Sutton Coldfield to take on the best in the country. This event attracts the best teams from throughout Great Britain who have to qualify through the area road relays. Mo Farah, the European Indoor 3000m champion, representing Newham and Essex Beagles was the star attraction amongst a host of other internationals in the mens and womens races.

Mark Dalkins fresh from his North Staffs League victory ran the opening leg in 17.36 finishing 22nd, the club's second fastset time of the day. Chris Rimmer went out on the second leg finishing 28th in 18.37, before handing over to Chris Davies. Davies stormed through the field despite having a slight ankle injury and improved 22 places to move Telford up to 6th in 16.42, which equals his time from 2007 as the 4th fastest ever. Chris Bagshaw ran 19.30 on the 4th leg before handing over to Chris Carter, promoted to the A team after his impressive run in the Midland relays, who ran 19.39 finishing 25th. Paul Ward who now lives close to the course ran the final leg in 18.26 finishing 22nd in a new club best time.

The race was won by Newham and Essex Beagles by over a minute from last years winners Belgrave, with Aldershot giving the Southern Counties a clean sweep in 3rd. Telford were the 5th MIdland club behind Tipton 8th, Birchfield 9th, Nottingham 12th and Bristol 13th.

Mo Farah who ran the 5th leg for Newham, had the fastest time of the day as he chased Chris Davies's much envied course record, he ran 16.33, the second fastest ever, 9 seconds quicker than Davies on the day but still 8 seconds slower than that the course record. Farah, the top distance runner in Europe is well supported by UK athletics with lottery funding and would not have had to do a mornings work before he raced.

Telford's womens team finished a very good 19th on the day in the womens 4 stage relay held over a slightly shorter 4.3 kilometre course. Cathy Ansell, now based in London as she starts a new university course returned home to run the first leg in 15.16 finishing 24th. Claire Martin ran the second leg in 15.01 moving up to 14th. Michelle Clarke ran the 3rd leg in 16.12 in 15th whilst Nellie Sanders completed the quartet in 16.29 finishing 19th in a total time of 1 hour 2 minutes and 58 seconds. Aldershot comfortably won the race with Chester le Street second and Norwich third, Telford were the 4th Midland team, behind Bristol 4th, Charnwood 6th and Birchfield 7th.

Telford had 2 B teams on the day and their times were Cheralyn Evans 17.20, Lisa Blagden 19.13, Juliet Hoad 22.08, John Sanders 20.38, Wayne Dashper 20.00, Richard Lucock 19.59, Jonathan Hockey 20.13, Paul Williams 21.42 and Dave Mansbridge 20.03.

Birmingham Cross country league Race 1: Senneleys

Photo courtesey of Brian Smith:http://www.flickr.com/photos/baldeagle/sets/72157622527667635/

Well where do I start, first of all I would like to thank John Bradley and Malcolm Dawes for arriving early with me and putting up the tent in what can be said was awful conditions, Thank you......

First Up in the juniors was Chloe Murphy, running in the U17 womens race in wet and windy conditions and with a injury to her hamstring came home in 5th position, well done Chloe. In the U15 boys race Luke Tatton was flying the flag, still with weather conditions against the athletes and on a tough course Luke had a spirited run to finish17th.In the U13 girls Isabel Bradley ran a superb race to finish 5th. In the U15 girls we had two athletes putting in great performances Lauren Pestana finishing in the top10 in 8th and making it a family affair Sarah Tatton came home in a great 12th place.

The first of the Midlands womens league races saw a small womens turn out, but none the less the size didn't matter because the ladies ran brilliantly. Cathy Ansell leading the women home in a fantastic 14th place overall, Michelle Clarke came home next in 29th also 3rd in her age group, Cherlyn Evans ran superbly to finish 69th. The women had to go through the stream which the organisers decided very cruelly to clean it out and widen it which ment it was nearly impossible for the ladies to hurdle it. On the tough undulating course we had Juliet Hoad coming back from injury to finish 111th, Lisa Blagden 123rd running strongly all the way to the finish and Susan Baker came in 186th. Well done to all the ladies. Looking forward to seeing your next race report.

The first of the mens race saw Chris Davies almost lead from start to finish showing impressive hurdling technique over the water and coming in a brilliant 3rd and second in the league, I don't have at the time of writing this report have full race results but here are the athletes who ran and there provisional results in the league:

Chris Davies 2nd
Mark Dalkins 3rd
Paul Ward 4th
Chris Bagshaw 13th
Will Joycee 16th
Richard Lucock 24st
Greg Wilson 30th
Chris Carter 36rd
Ioan Illie 37th
Johnathon Hockey 45nd
Jamie Davies 53th
Nick Andrews 64th
Simon Vines 68th
Rick Hailey 72nd
John Garmson 78th
Paul Williams 94th
Steve Jones 98th
Dave Tatton 132nd
Alan Mcdonald 134th
Malcolm Dawes 140th
Darren Fincham 181st

As soon as I get full results I will update the report, thank you ladies and gentlemen for running and showing the Birmingham League Telford are a force to run against. I hope you all had fun and I hope you felt well supported by your fellowTelford athletes.....

Full results are in and there are a couple of places different to how it looked but we finished with 59 points to Gloucesters 170 well done lads:

Background
The AAA 6-Stage Road Relay was inaugurated in 1969 but was not held in Sutton Park until 1986. The venue was again used in1989 and 1992, and from1995 onwards Sutton Park became the race's permanent home. The course length varied due to haphazard positioning of the cone that marks the turning point at the far end of the circuit. In 2001 a permanent marker was put down but it was some distance further out than had recently been the norm, increasing the recent individual times by something approaching 30 seconds. As a result, the best times from 2001 onwards are now recorded as the course records. The distance is described as being 5847m.

Chris Davies (Telford AC) Still holds the course record with 16:25 running on leg 2 25 Oct 2003

2009 Season Review

2009 Season Review

As September finishes, so another track and field season ends for Telford AC. The season has seen lots of outstanding performances and improvements in many of the club’s athletes.
The two biggest moments from the club came in international competition.

Bethan Partridge had been ranked a clear number one in the high jump under 20 rankings all season, and this season she was called up for the England Senior team to jump in Cork, Ireland. She jumped a big personal best of 1.80m, putting her in the top ten in the UK for seniors and way ahead of her nearest under 20 rival. She had many more international matches such as the Victoria Open in Australia at the start of the season and Antwerp at the end. She finished the season ranked 11th for UK seniors and 40th on the all-time under 20s rankings.

The other big success for the club was the success of our two Masters sprinters at the World Masters Championships in Finland. Richard Rubenis won a bronze medal in the 400m and Jim Tipper came sixth in the 200m final despite an injury. The two Telford athletes went in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays and won gold in both, setting a new British Record for the 4x400m.

Telford AC also had two national champions.

Chris Carter won the 1500m at the England Indoor Championships last winter, and Richard Rubenis won the British Masters Championship 400m, setting a new British record in the progress.

Aidan Reynolds (javelin), Sophie Worrall (long jump) and Hayley Rubery (pole vault) were selected for the UK School Games in Cardiff, where Aidan won a bronze medal.

Other important accomplishments of athletes include Bethan Partridge coming second in the u20 England Championships high jump; Hayley Rubery reaching the national standard in both pole vault and high jump; Callum Rubery coming fourth in the discus in the England Champs; Tino Dummett running the 100m for the Welsh Senior team; and Nancy Ndure jumping 1.65m in the u15 high jump for a ranking of tenth in the UK.

Hopefully next season will be just as successful for Telford athletes as the 2009 one has been. Athletes looking to make it big next season are Ben Simons in the long jump, Bethan Partridge in the high jump, Jim Tipper in the 200m, Richard Rubenis in the 400m, Tino Dummett in the 100m, Callum and Hayley Rubery in the discus, Toby Birtwhistle in the 800m, Becca Fagan in the shotputt, Danny Baeriswyl in the javelin, Micthell Jenderko in the 100m and Vinec Adiamah in the 100m.

Look out for the 2010 season review next October, and see how these aspiring athletes got on and see if any dark horses surprised the club with excellent performances. Keep a lookout for The Bollard, Telford AC’s magazine which comes out a few times a year at key points in the track and field season, if you want to keep up-to-date with the happenings at Telford Athletic Club.

Jim Tipper

Jim Tipper
Masters V35
Event:200m, PB:21.52, UK Ranking 2009:2
About Jim

Jim is an outstanding 200m athlete who holds the Masters World Record for the 4x100m. He started the season very strong indeed and looked set to run a very fast time but crashed out of the Midlands Champs due to injury and couldn’t race or train again until the World Masters Champs 6 weeks later. Through sheer determination he progressed through each round of the World Championships to the final, where he came a momentous sixth place, far ahead of anyone’s expectations. He went on to win two gold medals with the Great Britain relay team, snatching the British Record for the 4x400m. For next year he is aiming to go much faster than in 2009, if he stays uninjured he hopes to dip below 22 seconds for the 200m. He looks to become British Masters Champion at 100m and 200m and win a medal at the European Masters Champs in Hungary in 2010.

Telford Games 2009 A BIG Success

Telford Athletics Stadium once again witnessed a spectacular day of athletics when it hosted the Telford Games on the 12th September, Telford Athletic Club’s annual host competition.

The two most anticipated showdowns of the day were the senior men’s 100m and 200m finals.
Callum Rubery won two gold medals and a silver at the GamesTelford athlete Jim Tipper reached the 200m final of the Masters World Championships this year, and he faced Telford’s 400m bronze medallist Richard Rubenis, who this year set the British Championship 400m record. Both also won two gold medals at the World Championships for the relays.

In the 100m, Rubenis got a blistering start and looked like he was going to win, but Tipper came charging through to win in 11.2 seconds, Rubenis just behind with 11.3.
Telford’s newest 200m runner Mike Dickens took the bronze medal in 11.7, a metre clear of Coventry athlete Michael Thomson in fourth.
The highly-ranked Birchfield athlete Justin Grimes of Birmingham joined the Telford trio in the 200m. Tipper showed his dominance of the event with a win in 22.7, while Rubenis just managed to hold off Grimes for second place in 22.9, Grimes also getting the same time. Mike Dickens of Telford finished with a solid time of 23.5, comfortably ahead of the fifth place finisher.

Photo Finish
One of the most exciting events of the day was the under-20 men’s 800m. Toby Birtwhistle, one of Telford’s best junior athletes, lined up against Will Ganley of Wolverhampton & Bilston AC, a very tough competitor. Ganley took the lead early in the race and pulled ahead, Birtwhistle tagging along behind. As the bell went to signify the last lap, Ganley sprinted off and put even more distance between himself and the Telford athlete, but Toby kept his composure and used his phenomenal speed to catch up to Ganley on the final straight, where he pulled level. Using his last reserves of energy, Toby blazed down the track and passed Ganley with barely ten metres to go, winning in 1 minute 59.5 seconds. Ganley got second place in 1’59.7.

Second Gold
Toby also won the senior men’s 400m. He faced one of Telford’s best 400m runners Pete Arnold, and Ben Riekstins, the under-20’s 400m record holder for the Telford Games.Riekstins got the best start and led for most of the race, but Birtwhistle came past on the crown of the bend for the gold medal in 51.9, ahead of Arnold (52.5) and Riesktins (53.1).

Other Performances

Telford AC’s Bethan Partridge (pictured above), member of the England Senior Women’s High Jump team, effortlessly won the high jump with a 1.75m jump and the triple jump in 11.44m, both clear ahead of the rest of the field. She also won a silver medal in the long jump with a jump of 5.07m.
Georgia Haydon of Telford charged to an overwhelming victory in the under-11 girl’s 600m, winning in 2’02.2, over nine seconds ahead of second place.

Telford’s Nancy Ndure won the under-15 girl’s high jump, clearing a massive 1.65 and equalling the Championship Record. She also came second in the long jump and was looking like she would win the 75m hurdles before she hit a hurdle and fell, unfortunately ending her race.

Sophie Worrall won two golds and a silver, winning the under-17 women 200m final in 27.0 and the long jump in 5.32, and grabbing second place in the 80m hurdles with 12.3.

Hayley Rubery, one of Telford’s best female athletes, won not only the under-17 women’s discus by 8m with a throw of 32.43, she also won the senior women’s pole vault in 2.90m ahead of Hereford’s Sarah Jones with 2.60m.

Becca Fagan won the under-17 women’s shotputt with 9.96, and Jess Bailey won the under-17s 1500m in 5’18.1.

In the under-20 women, England girl’s basketball team captain Amelia Reynolds won the 3000m final in 11’21.0, and got second place in the senior women’s shotputt with 8.77m.

Helen Martin won the senior 100m in 13.3 seconds.

Men’s Performances
Ian Taylor won two medals, getting gold in the discus with 38.85m, and 11.34 in the shotputt for silver.
Dale Wilkinson got gold in the men’s 1500m with 4’25.2, followed by fellow Telford athlete Simon Vines, running 4’33.6 for second.

Ben Simons came back from injury to win the long jump in 7.16m without a full run-up, still way over a metre clear of the rest of the field.

Telford rivals Danny Baeriswyl and Rob Millar once again clashed in the under-20 men javelin, this time Millar just coming out on top with a throw of 47.83, edging Baeriswyl’s throw of 47.15 for the gold medal.

Mitchell Jenderko won the under-17 men’s long jump with a jump of 6.08m, and grabbed a bronze medal in the 100m in a time of 11.6.

The most bizarre combination of medals went to Callum Rubery, who not only effortlessly won the under-15 boy’s discus in 37.59 and got silver in the shotputt with a throw of 10.37, but also won the under-15’s high jump, clearing 1.50m.

Nick Pearce came second in the high jump with 1.45m.

Stroke of Luck
Despite the mild weather this summer, a heatwave struck on the weekend of the Games, making it a very enjoyable day for all spectators and athletes. For Telford’s athletes, the next competition is the Shropshire Championships next May and the Shropshire School’s Championships for the younger ones in the same month.

The Telford Games was the conclusion of a year’s competing and training for many athletes, and all the athletes are now looking forward to a good winter’s training to make them better than ever next year.

The Badger Bite 04-Oct-09

Not a wet as last year...In fact the sun was shining as a record number of runners - 350! - turned out for this very popular 6KM off road tester.

In the ladies race TAC's Claire Martin battled with Debbie Walters to take second place. Nellie was third lady improving on her time from last year by over a minute. All three ladies smashed the course record. Juliet Hoad completed the female TAC squad.

Paul Ward running for Wrekin Road Runners won the race and also took the course record. We think Paul was keen to get back to spend time with his hero, Don Goodman!

Previous winner Dave Mansbridge was first TAC man home in 4th place with Johnny Sanders in 8th nicely sandwiched between the two leading ladies.

Full results will appear on the Badger Bite web site and a brilliant set of photos from Brian Smith are free on Brian's Flickr site.

Everyone piled into the Seven Stars at Beckbury for the presentation where soccer super star Don Goodman presented the prizes.
