Wrekin Streak.
Steven Cale retained his title as King of the Wrekin as he regained his Wrekin Streak title. The Mercia Fell Runner and Wrekin College teacher has also two current victories in the longer Wrekin Fell Race so has a real claim to this title. He won this years Streak, a blast to the top and back from the Forest Glen in 17.42 his fastest on the course and 23 seconds quicker than last year which puts him 9th on the all time list behind the course record of 16.38.
Mel Price, another Mercia fell runner from Wooston, near Church Stretton, followed up her great victory in the Shropshire Winter Series with her first win in the Wrekin Streak, in 21.29 after finishing 2nd last year and 3rd in 2009. Her time was the equal 6th fastest ever and the fastest winning time since 2008. Polly Gibb, from Coalbrookdale was the second lady in 23.16 and first over 45 having been a previous winner of the race in 1989 and 1990 with her fastest time being 20.37. Sarah Howells, a Wrekin College student was the first under 16 to finish and 3rd overall in 25,30, with Ruth Stafford of Mercia 4th in 25.39. Telford Harriers Jean Turner was 5th and first over 50 in 25.42 whilst Kathryn Morgans from Wolverhampton and Bilston was 6th in 26.08 whilst Telford AC's Juliett Hoad was 7th and first over 45 in 26.22.
Daniel Maskew from Wolverhampton and Bilston was second in the mens race in 18.09 which puts him 22nd on the all time list whilst Shrewsbury AC's Ian Howarth fresh from his marathon debut in London made his debut in a Shropshire fell race finishing third in 18.37. Paul Jones from Mercia was 4th and first over 40 in 18.49 with his team mate Daniel Brazier 5th in 18.59, whilst last years runner up Ian Grindley from Wolves was 6th and first over 45 in 19.11. Shrewsbury School student Cal Winwood, one of the top junior cross country runners in the county was 7th in 19.31.
Kristian Edwards from Tamworth was 9th overall and first Under 16 in 19.53, with Shrewsbury's Jack Francis second in 25.16 and Thomas Davies from Mormon Noob third in 25.03. In the Under 12's race Kodee Wilkes was first and Amber Gibb second.
The Wrekin Streak was organised by Simon Daws of Ironbridge and held in conjunction with Southall School, Telford to which most proceeds from the race will be going. The Wrekin was the first race in the Shropshire Summer Series and all race organisers are this summer holding races for under 12, Under 14 and Under 16's as part of their races.
