North Wales Cross Country at Bangor


North Wales Cross Country League.

Claire Martin led the Telford Athletic Club ladies team to a team victory in the opening fixture of this years North Wales Cross Country League, held at Treborth Playing Fields, Bangor, hosted by Eryri Athletic Club. The long drive to the Bangor venue which is on the banks of the Menai Straits, did not deter the Telford ladies as they comfortably won Division One scoring 40 points with Colwyn Bay second with 62 pts and Eryri third with 63 pts. Martin the reigning GB Masters Cross Country Champion, came second on the day to Georgia Garner a talented under 20 runner from Colwyn Bay, who won in 18.43, 17 seconds clear, with Debbie Williams from Menai taking 3rd a further 43 seconds adrift. Michelle Clarke 11th and first over 40 in 21.31, Sarah Mackness 12th in 21.35, Nellie Sanders 15th in 22.16, Sarah Tatton 35th in 24.44 and Sharon Clayton 43rd in 25.37completed the Telford line up. The Telford AC Masters team were also first with 13 points with Wrexham 2nd on 22pts and Eryri third with 27 pts.

Shrewsbury Marathon winner Wayne Dashper led home the Telford AC mens team in 10th, 33.36, just ahead of his team mate Rob Hughes 12th in 33.37. John Garmson was the next TAC finisher 27th in 35.24 and the first over 50 over a minute clear of his nearest age group rival. Ashley Slater was the 4th club finisher 38th in 36.18. Rick Hailey made a welcome return to cross country action finishing 77th in 40.46. Andrew Yates completed the Telford AC scoring team in 94th competing in his first cross country race for many years. Nigel Tatton 118th and Daron Fincham 128th completed the team.

Shrewsbury AC were the leading Shropshire team finishing 3rd in Division 1 with 243 points behind Eryri, 108 and Deeside 128. Telford AC were 4th, 258, with Oswestry 7th, 472 pts. Whitchurch Whippets were 10th in Division 2 with 656 points whilst Bridgnorth AC were 12th out of 15 finishing teams with 848 pts. Shrewsbury were also the leading masters team finishing 3rd, whilst Telford were 7th and Whitchurch 12th.

The next race in the league takes place at St David's College, Llandudno on Saturday 19th October.
